The hunt for the ‘liberals’
In post-divorce referendum Malta, the ‘liberals’ are in vogue. The two main political parties are falling all over themselves to win the hearts and minds of ‘liberals’. Yet, they fail to ground their appeal in any vision that shows signs of a liberal agenda.
A step in the right direction
Despite the odds, the majority have voted in favour of divorce being introduced in Malta. Now, it is up to Parliament to respect that choice. This was only a consultative referendum, and MPs have the last word. Yet, they must acknowledge that they are now forced to face the fact that citizens in this country are demanding a different model of governance – one where citizens are free to enjoy the civil rights they deserve rather than be governed by laws that restrict their freedom based on dogma.
Divorce: dogma vs democracy
Minister Austin Gatt’s statement, that divorce only becomes a civil right when Parliament recognises it, recalls the claim made by the French King Louis’ XIV: ‘L’Etat, c’est moi’ (I am the State). Dr Gatt’s statement reflects the arrogance that breeds in those who have held positions of power for far too long.

The Church is adopting the sinister methods of multinational corporations to counter the movement demanding the introduction of divorce legislation. When the divorce ‘debate’ started, the Church seemed to be embarking on a similar campaign against divorce legislation that it had implemented in countries such as Chile.
