It is extremely rare that someone is prosecuted for human trafficking in Maltese courts, and yet Malta is recognised as a destination in the international network profiting from modern day slavery, largely affecting women and girls. Is the failure to identify these networks in Malta a result of a lack of capacity, complacency or corruption?

We cannot address gender inequality without examining the culture, belief systems and often-outdated religious traditions that breed it and legitimatise it. Women’s Day is a reminder of that obligation. That’s why events such as those in aid of the President’s charity are so frustrating – they serve to sustain stereotypes that remain an obstacle to equality.

The recent rhetoric about the need to increase female participation in the labour market may be a welcome change to those who have been calling for the need to address gender inequality in the country. But the measures introduced in the so-called ‘family budget’ need context and evaluation.
